The Columbine High School Massacre was one of the most important impacts of our nation and our school systems for a multitude of reasons. A rather common but nonetheless heartbreaking event, the tragic murders of twelve people left many hearts broken and spirits withered. Families, friends, and all people nationwide watch their TVs in shock and sorrow, as they hear the gunshots and see the tears flowing in young teenager’s eyes. Most heartbreaking however was the fact that it wasn’t some foreign terrorist attack nor some natural fire, but rather at the helm of two psychologically troubled teenagers who wanted revenge. This in particular led a huge impact in our society, such as a push to more weapons security as well as multiple campaigns on Anti-Bullying and Mental Health counseling. But a lot of these changes were hinged on the biggest question of the time – “why? Why did they do this?” Multiple claims were thrown into discussion but barely any of them were concrete: “It’s the videogames!”, says one. “It’s the bullies!” says another. “Maybe it’s that pesky Marilyn Manson!”, says that fellow over yonder. Even to this day, these perceptions on the promotion of terrorism lingered as many people desperately wished for an answer to this tragedy.

It’s four years later, and a new group of students has been placed in Saturday detention at the infamous and prestigious Crestview Academy. When Siouxsie, sophomore ‘undercrust,’ crashes the party to avenge her sister’s death, a Saturday detention reserved for the privileged seniors of Crestview Academy turns into a date in hell. It’s not long before a naïve pussycat lover, gay drug dealer, smokin’ hot preacher’s daughter, squeaky-clean senator’s son, and the uninvited younger outsider find themselves locked-up in school with no way out, wondering who (or what) has set them up. Hilarity and suspense ensue while each ‘bad kid’ pits one against the other, and one by one each falls victim to absurdly gruesome ‘accidents’ while trying to escape.

Ben Browder seems to have learned a LOT of valuable lessons from his first “Bad Kids” attempt — just a rambly B movie which gained cult status because of some clever tropes — and came back with a film which (I kid you not) has a remarkably tight script, good performances and good production values.

Which is not to say that the Coen Brothers are nervous, far from it. But the script is so interesting (with sly hints of Scream, Friday the 13th, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and even No Country For Old Men) that it actually engages and holds the attention.

And Sammi Hanratty gives what can best be called a bravura performance, biting into each line of dialogue and each piece of mayhem like she actually believes what she is saying … like her career depends on it (which it probably DOES!) … and essentially picks the film up and carries it to the finish line.

A private eye investigates the apparent suicide of a fading porn star in 1970s Los Angeles and uncovers a conspiracy.

It’s 1977 Los Angeles. Star Wars has premiered. Disco is in full swing. And porn star Misty Mountains has just died (spectacularly). It’s pretty disturbing then that dodgy licensed private investigator Holland March (Ryan Gosling) has been hired two days later to find Misty by the slightly kooky Mrs Glenn (Lois Smith, the equally kooky doctor in “Minority Report”) who saw her through the windows of Misty’s home. Never one to turn down a pay check, Holland takes the case and the trail leads him to search for a missing girl called Amelia (Margaret Qualley). This leads him right into the substantial fists of the ‘heavy for hire’ Jackson Healey (Russell Crowe), who’s been hired by Amelia NOT to be found. But it’s clear that Amelia is at the centre of a tornado of intrigue, since her mother Judith (Kim Basinger) is head of the Justice department and there are some heavies from New York and Detroit looking for Amelia too.

As the film’s tag-line admits “The Nice Guys” are “far from nice”, and this is a sort of bromance buddy movie of the likes of “Lethal Weapon”. (And that comparison is 100% valid since – and I honestly discovered this after I wrote that – director Shane Black (“Iron Man 3”) got into cinema by writing the screenplay for the original “Lethal Weapon” back in 1987). But “The Nice Guys” has an edge that those films of the 80’s couldn’t have got away with. Subtle it ain’t. There is a lot of violence, a bit of 70’s porn and some fruity language that sensitive viewers may find offensive. (All in all, it’s a bit of a surprise that it got away with a ’15’ certificate in the UK).

How to Be Single

New York City is full of lonely hearts seeking the right match, and what Alice, Robin, Lucy, Meg, Tom and David all have in common is the need to learn how to be single in a world filled with ever-evolving definitions of love.

‘How to be Single’ centres around Alice, played by Dakota Johnson (‘Fifty Shades of Grey’), and her transition into post-breakup life in New York City. Once she arrives at her new job she becomes fast friends with Rebel Wilson (‘Pitch Perfect’), a guru on the single way of life. This involves a lot of partying, drinking, and waking up in random people’s bedrooms, all to a soundtrack of Izzy Azalea and Taylor Swift. You get the picture.

Romcom staple Leslie Mann plays Alice’s older and supposedly wiser sister. This character goes from hating children to booking herself a sperm-donor online, in the space of about a week. Another subplot, which has very little to do with the main story, involves Alison Brie (‘Community’) who is also looking for love in the Big Apple. Instead of the partying/one-night-stand formula, she devises an online dating algorithm to find the perfect man, with some pretty bad results.
